Abstract
A species of the right-eyed flatfish family S amaridae, Samariscus ino rnatus, was collected from the Gulf of Elat. This species was previous ly known only from three syntypes from the Gulf of Aden. The species i s redescribed and a key to the species of Samariscus is presented. One specimen of the pleuronectid Pleuronectes platessa was collected from the Gulf of Elat. This species is distribution from the White Sea, al ong the coasts of Europe, to the northern area of the Atlantic coast o f Morocco and the western and central areas of the Mediterranean Sea. The Adriatic Sea is the eastern limit of this Mediterranean distributi on. It appears to be highly probable that this species has been introd uced into the Gulf of Elat via ballast water of ocean-going vessels. S ince only one specimen was collected, it is not known if this species is established in the Red Sea.
