High resolution colour mapping using modern technology has allowed us
to explore the breadth of census data available to the contemporary so
cial scientist. An examination of methods used to create cartograms, w
hich minimise visual bias involves considering how densities and area
boundaries should be mapped. The Modifiable Area Unit Problem is discu
ssed and the advantages of using three-colour or trivariate mapping ar
e outlined. Further modifications to traditional census mapping such a
s the mapping of change and flow are addressed.
