A group of 20 South African Streptococcus pneumoniae strains isolated
between 1978-1988 (MICs 0.015-0.5 mug/ml) which possesses a HMW PBP 3
was investigated using PBP 1A, 2B and 2X gene fingerprinting. Similar
PBP 2B and 2X fingerprints were found with 17 of 18 isolates with MICs
of 0.125-0.5 mg/l, and 13 strains examined produced similar PBP IA fi
ngerprints. It is epidemiologically interesting how such intermediatel
y-resistant strains have persisted without further PBP gene diversity.
