The synthesis of uranium hexafluoride, UF6, using uranium metal and ch
lorine trifluoride is described. The method is suitable for laboratory
scale (10-20 g) preparation of pure UF6. Raman spectra of pure UF6 ha
ve been observed for the solid state and for the first time in cyanoge
n chloride solution. The coordination behaviour of UF6 towards Lewis b
ases like cyanogen chloride (ClCN), cyanogen ((CN)(2)), hydrogen cyani
de (HCN) and malononitrile (CH2(CN)(2)) was investigated.
