A mechanism of silicic acid polymerization and sol formation at pH > 7
is proposed. The genesis of primary particles in the gel, the structu
re of silica globules arising at pH > 7, and the chemistry of surface
hydroxyls are considered. The mechanism of silica macrostructure forma
tion is put forward, and its relation to micro- and macroparameters is
discussed. Spectroscopic data is interpreted on the basis of the mode
l proposed for the silica gel structure.
