Patrick Sourander was the Professor of Neuropathology at the Universit
y of Goteborg, Sweden, who died on September 28, 1993. His scientific
interests focused on metabolic disturbances, in particular leucodystro
phies, lipidosis and the consequences of malnutrition. He was the co-d
iscoverer of an inherited cerebrovascular disease now termed CADASIL (
cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and
leuokoencephalopathy). Earlier than many contemporary neuropathologis
ts, Patrick Sourander realized the potential of a close cooperation be
tween basic neurobiology and clinical investigations. As a founding me
mber of the International Society of Neuropathology, Patrick held the
office of Vice-President during 1974-1978 and was the President of the
Xth International Congress of Neuropathology held in Stockholm, in 19
86.
