Abstract
Spectroscopic studies show that maleic anhydride undergoes a Diels-Ald er reaction with conjugated double bonds such as beta-carotene and par tially dehydrochlorinated PVC. This reaction is also observed in the s tabilization of PVC with dialkyltin maleate stabilizers. It follows th at the efficiency of the stabilization is related to the saturation of the double bonds in the polymer backbone, in addition to the well est ablished substitution reaction.
