Principles and methods for the development of cleaner chemical process
es are discussed. The major part of the paper is dedicated to the deve
lopment of ecologically more compatible waste treatment/disposal proce
sses. Supercritical fluids as reaction media and as separation solvent
s and the application of indirect electroredox processes have been sel
ected for process development. The R&D activities described in the pap
er include the cleaning of contaminated aqueous effluents by supercrit
ical oxidation and of liquid effluents and solids by supercritical ext
raction as well as the electrochemical destruction of organic pollutan
ts.
