Abstract
The thermal expansion of single-crystal HoCo3Ni2, which belongs to the uniaxial hexagonal hard magnets RECo(5), has been measured along the a- and c-axes in the temperature range 6.5-270 K. The spontaneous spin -reorientation transition that occurs in HoCo3Ni2 between Ts(SR1) = 16 0 K and Ts(SR2) = 200 K is found to be accompanied by appreciable chan ges in the lattice parameters. The magnetostriction constants lambda(1 )(alpha,0), lambda(2)(alpha,0), lambda(1)(alpha,2), and lambda(2)(alph a,2) of HoCo3Ni2 are determined and compared with prediction of the po int-charge model.
