A. Schmalz et al., STRUCTURE OF THE QUASI-HEXAGONAL CLOSE-PACKED (4-X-4) NA LAYER ON AL(111) - A SEXAFS STUDY, Surface science, 301(1-3), 1994, pp. 120000211-120000216
The Al(111)-(4x4)-Na structure formed by adsorption of Na on Al(111) a
t low temperature is studied by surface extended X-ray absorption fine
structure (SEXAFS). Analysis of the SEXAFS measurements shows that th
e adsorbed layer is quasihexagonal close-packed and slightly compresse
d, with a nearest-neighbour Na-Na bond length of 3.70+/-0.03 Angstrom.
Na atoms are adsorbed in 3 different adsorption sites with roughly eq
ual Na-Al bond lengths of 2.8 Angstrom but different perpendicular dis
tances from the surface. Thus the Na layer is not strictly planar.
