Jg. Ponterotto et al., ASSESSING MULTICULTURAL COUNSELING COMPETENCE - A REVIEW OF INSTRUMENTATION, Journal of counseling and development, 72(3), 1994, pp. 316-322
The authors review four new instruments designed to assess multicultur
al counseling competence in trainees and practicing professionals. The
Cross-Cultural Counseling Inventory-Revised (CCCI-R), the Multicultur
al Counseling Awareness Scale-Form B (MCAS:B), the Multicultural Couns
eling Inventory (MCI), and the Multicultural Awareness-Knowledge-and S
kills Survey (MAKSS) were each critically reviewed in terms of item de
velopment, psychometric properties, and pragmatic utility. Specific re
search suggestions for continued empirical validation on the instrumen
ts are posited, and strong cautions regarding their current use in tra
ining are leveled.
