A comparison of the analyses of 490 serum samples from various flocks
of sheep for the detection of BHV-5 antibodies using ELISA, serum neut
ralisation test, cell assay and immunofluorescence assay showed nearly
identical results regarding the distinction between positive and nega
tive serum samples. The percentage of serum samples with antibodies ag
ainst BHV-5 antigen differed from test to test: ELISA 268 (54,7 %), ce
ll assay 323 (65,8 %), immunofluorescence assay 222 (46,6 %) and serum
neutralisation test 221 (45,1 %). With ELISA, cell assay and immunofl
uorescence assay the experiment can be carried out more simply and rap
idly than with serum neutralisation test.
