Abstract
We present a dynamic light-scattering experiment on a planarly oriente d nematic liquid crystal in the presence of a symmetry-breaking electr ic field applied normally to the cell planes. This experiment gives di rect evidence for the critical behavior of the lowest splay fluctuatio n mode. A detailed theoretical analysis of the dynamics of this mode i s worked out and compared with the experimental results.
