Abstract
We develop a three-dimensional theory of the ion-ripple laser by using a consistent set of wave and pendulum equations to characterize the c oherent radiation in the fundamental and harmonic frequencies. The sma ll-signal gain is obtained by an eigenmode analysis. The optical-guidi ng effects on the harmonic generation in the linear regime are discuss ed. Under proper conditions, the ion-ripple laser may provide a practi cal source of microwaves, light rays, and even x rays.
