In the course of an investigation of the leaf fragrance of Rosa rugosa
, three sesquiterpene alcohols, 4-epi-alpha bisabolol [(4R:8S)-bisabol
a-1(7),12(13)-dien-8-ol], norbisabolol [7-norbisabola-1(2),12(13)-dien
-8-ol] and 10-hydroxyisodaucene [carota-4(5),11(12)-dien-l0-ol], and t
wo novel sesquiterpene peroxides, 1,5-epidioxy-4-hydroperoxycarot-2-en
e and 1,5-epidioxy-2-hydroxycarot-3-ene, were isolated from the glandu
lar trichome exudates of the leaves. The presence of(+)-4-epi-alpha-bi
sabolol in the exudates was consistent with stereochemistry of C-7 oxy
genated bisabolanoids from Rosa species. 5-Hydroxycarota-1,3-dien-14-o
ic acid ethyl ester, regarded as an artifact, was also isolated and it
s structure elucidated.
