Two ester alkaloids, cineverine and a new compound, for which we sugge
st the name cineroctine, were isolated from twigs of Genista cinerea s
ubsp. cinerea. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic metho
ds to be 13 alpha-(3', 4'-dimethoxybenzoyl)oxylupanine (cineverine) an
d 13 alpha-(3-hydroxy-cis-oct-5-enoyl)oxylupanine (cineroctine), 13-O-
axial derivatives of lupanine. The distribution of these ester alkaloi
ds amongst the different species of the section Spartioides of the gen
us Genista is recorded.
