Abstract
Exceptional nonlinear Lagrangians for a spin-2 field in terms of Fierz variables are obtained using the method proposed by Lax. They are equ ivalent to the Born-Infeld Lagrangian for a spin-I field theory and ar e free from unbounded growth of wave velocities.
