Two years ago South African migratory beekeepers moved colonies of Cap
e bees into the Transvaal and Natal, both these provinces being Africa
n bee territory. The subsequent invasion of apiaries by Cape laying wo
rkers resulted in the virtual collapse of the bee industry in those ar
eas. The reports in the American Bee Journal covering the disaster wer
e intended by their author primarily as a warning to the world's beeke
epers about the dangers of importing the Cape bee into their countries
. However judging by letters received by the author from several ABJ r
eaders, it is clear that the message carried in those reports has some
how gone astray.
