Dihydroxy derivatives of para-substituted dibenzoylmethanes were prepa
red. On continuous irradiation, these compounds undergo homolytic frag
mentation in the position Lu to the CO group. The quantum yields of ch
romophore destruction are high and are indicative of high rates of rad
ical production. A photocalorimetric and real time IR (RTIR) study of
the radical polymerization of acrylic monomers shows that these compou
nds are excellent photoinitiators.
