Gi. Malovichko et al., THE EFFECT OF IRON IONS ON THE DEFECT STRUCTURE OF LITHIUM-NIOBATE CRYSTALS GROWN FROM K2O CONTAINING MELTS, Solid state communications, 89(3), 1994, pp. 195-198
The most narrow ESR linewidths possible for Fe-Li(3+) in nominally pur
e melts are observed in stoichiometric material obtained from growth o
ut of melts containing K2O. We report that the addition of only 0.05 w
t% Fe2O3 to the melt strongly increases the linewidths, pointing to a
pronounced in influence of Fe on the defect structure of LiNbO3. Optic
al absorption studies show that Fe-Li(2+) exists in such crystals in h
igher concentrations than in conventional LiNbO3 even before reduction
. This is attributed to the decreased content of intrinsic compensatin
g defects, caused by K2O growth.
