Abstract
The spatial dependence properties of the gain offered by long erbium-d oped amplifiers in a soliton transmission system are accurately invest igated. The possibility of reaching a prefixed value of gain with a va riety of different configurations is proved, showing that significant deviations from the ideal behaviour are possible in principle. Their e ffect on the shape of propagating soliton is also discussed.
