Quantitative measurements of oxygen octahedra local rotation angles ar
e reported for the antiferrodistortive type perovskites, Na0.82K0.18Ta
O3 and NaTaO3. The results were obtained using a detailed analysis of
x-ray absorption fine structure spectra. These results show that the o
xygen octahedra rotation angle at the peak of the rotation angle distr
ibution function of an antiferrodistortive crystal is nonzero and larg
e, hundreds of degrees above the transition temperature.
