Jo. Nilsson, THE USE OF MODERN PHYSICAL METALLURGY IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SPECIAL STAINLESS-STEELS, Journal de physique. IV, 3(C7), 1993, pp. 67-76
A selection of examples have been made to illustrate the use of microa
nalytical instruments and thermodynamics in the development of steels.
It has been shown that the combined use of electron microscopy, secon
dary ion mass spectroscopy, atom probe field ion microscopy and the th
ermodynamic computer program Thermo-Calc is a particularly powerful to
ol in aquiring a deeper understanding of the the relation between micr
ostructure and properties. It has also been demonstrated that Thermo-C
alc can be used routinely in alloy development for predicting phase eq
uilibria.
