Abstract
Treatment of 2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran-4(3H)-ones (2a,b) with dimet hyl sulphate in alkali gives the corresponding methyl ethers (3a,b). T he reaction of 3a-c with methyl vinyl ketone affords -dimethyl-3(3-oxo butyl)-2H-1-benzopyran-4(3H)-ones (4a-c) which are converted to the co rresponding dimethyl-6a,7,8,9-tetrahydro-6H-dibenzo[b,d]pyran- 9-ones (5a-c). The title compounds 6a-c have been synthesized by the Clemmens en reduction of 5a-c and characterized by their elemental analyses and IR and PMR spectral data.
