R. Nyffenegger et al., A MULTICENTER COMPARATIVE-STUDY OF BRODIMOPRIM AND AMOXICILLIN THERAPY IN THE TREATMENT OF TONSILLOPHARYNGITIS IN ADULTS, Journal of chemotherapy, 5(6), 1993, pp. 512-516
Study objective: To compare the efficacy and safety of brodimoprim (BD
P) with those of amoxicillin (AMX) in patients with acute bacterial ph
aryngitis/tonsillitis. Design: Randomized controlled study. Setting: H
ospital and general practices in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Pat
ients: 519 adult patients of both sexes aged 12 to 75 years. Intervent
ion: Patients were allocated to an 8- to 12-day treatment with BDP (40
0 mg loading dose followed by 200mg once a day) or AMX (750mg t.i.d).
Main outcome measures: Resolution of clinical signs/ symptoms and nega
tive bacterial examination at completion of therapy. Results: Clinical
cure/improvement rate of 97.8% and 94.8% in respectively the BDP and
the AMX group. Bacterial eradication in 87.7% of the cases treated wit
h BDP and 88.3% of those receiving AMX. Very good/good tolerability in
85.2% BDP- and 82.8% AMX treated patients.
