G. Vasquez et al., ISOLATED TRUE ATHEROSCLEROTIC ANEURYSMS OF THE SUPERFICIAL FEMORAL-ARTERY - CASE-REPORT AND LITERATURE-REVIEW, Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery, 34(6), 1993, pp. 511-512
Isolated true atherosclerotic aneurysms of the superficial femoral art
ery are rare. Wie report an original case of superficial femoral arter
y aneurysm (SFAA) not associated with dilatation of the common femoral
or popliteal artery. The review of the literature emphasizes the grea
t latency of the disease and the high incidence of complication at pre
sentation, as well as, echosonographic diagnostical advantages over an
giography. After surgical treatment the prognosis is favourable. Early
recognition and surgical repair are recommended for patients with ane
urysms of the superficial femoral artery greater at least twice the no
rmal vessel size. Elective surgical treatment is associated with littl
e risk to the patients and avoids the need for operation in the settin
g of limb-threatening ischemia.
