Cooling the pyrolytic graphite analyser crystals of the IRIS spectrome
ter to 25 K has proved to be very effective in suppressing the backgro
und from thermal diffuse scattering and in improving the contrast of t
he analysers. In this paper we show that a 12 times drop in background
has been realised and that it would fall by an additional factor of 3
-4 by further reducing the analyser temperature to 5 K.
