Studies were conducted to develop the technique of gamete intrafallopi
an tube transfer (GIFT) in mares using oocytes obtained by transvagina
l ultrasound-guided follicular aspiration. Between 2 and 6 in vivo mat
ured oocytes, collected by transvaginal follicular aspiration, were su
rgically transferred into the oviducts of 8 artificially inseminated,
reproductively sound mares. Two mares were confirmed pregnant based on
ultrasound examination 12 and 17 days post-transfer Pregnancy resulti
ng from possible fertilization of the recipient's oocyte was ruled out
in each case by DNA fingerprint analysis.
