Abstract
In direct detection optical transmission systems the fibre dispersion may be compensated for in the electrical domain, provided the modulati on index is small, and the signal is carried as a combined phase and a mplitude modulation. Limitations and design guidelines for transmissio n systems based on these principles are presented, with emphasis on di rectly modulated diode laser transmitters.
