In direct detection optical transmission systems the fibre dispersion
may be compensated for in the electrical domain, provided the modulati
on index is small, and the signal is carried as a combined phase and a
mplitude modulation. Limitations and design guidelines for transmissio
n systems based on these principles are presented, with emphasis on di
rectly modulated diode laser transmitters.
