Abstract
The authors show that third-order dispersion can lead to a serious dec rease in the effectiveness of pulse switching in a nonlinear direction al coupler. In contrast to the case of vanishing third-order dispersio n, the pulse shape is a cricial limitation. The influence of the third -order dispersion diminishes when the coupling coefficient decreases.
