The composition of methanol extracts from Quebracho colorado sapwood,
heartwood and the sapwood-heartwood boundary was investigated. The con
tent of sugars in the extract from sapwood amounted to 40%. Glucose, f
ructose and sucrose are the dominating sugars. At the heartwood periph
ery carbohydrates are converted into phenolic compounds and the amount
of tannins increases sharply. The phenolic extractives from sapwood a
nd heartwood differ with regard to composition and structure.
