The results of safety assessments expressed as risks or doses may be t
aken only as indicators of the safety of a repository system over prol
onged periods of time. Using a combination of safety indicators togeth
er with natural analogs can make a major contribution towards reducing
uncertainties in long-term safety assessment. In this report, an isol
ation potential is demonstrated for the German Konrad and Gorleben rep
ository projects which extends from the genesis of the host rock and o
f the geological system to the present. Comparable studies of other si
tes are unable, for that reason, to result in findings better than the
