Trichophyton rubrum dermatophyte produces both intra- and extracellula
r hemagglutinins during development in Sabouraud's media containing 4%
D-glucose an 1% peptone. A time-course study has been designed for th
e fungal growth with concomitant production of hemagglutinins. The eff
ect of nutrients on the production of both hemagglutinins has been inv
estigated using different media composition with varied D-glucose and
peptone concentrations. The results show that highest amount of hemagg
lutinin has been produced in presence of low D-glucose. Both intra- an
d extracellular hemaglutinins agglutinate, besides several vertebrate
erythrocytes, human erythrocytes of A, B and O blood group almost equa
lly and thus are considered to be blood-group nonspecific.
