Abstract
The deficiencies and future needs of synthetic structural advanced com posite materials are discussed in the light of the structural organiza tion at every dimensional level of biological materials. Future advanc ed materials concepts for their design, processing and performance are presented in terms of potential near- and longer term technological t hrust areas.
