Abstract
Salmeterol (1 nM-100 mu M) showed an inhibitory action on anaphylactic histamine release from mast cells, isolated from pleural and peritone al cavities of actively sensitized guinea-pigs and stimulated by incub ation with allergen. The effect is concentration-dependent and is redu ced by the beta-adrenoceptor antagonist propranolol (1 mu M). This stu dy supports the hypothesis of an antiinflammatory property of salmeter ol, which concerns cells involved in the early phases of asthma.
