The present paper examines mechanisms of active ion transport localize
d in the plasmalemma and processes of osmoregulation in halotolerant a
lgae in relation to their ability to accomplish the life cycle under c
onditions of high salinity of the medium. The main attention is focuss
ed on weakly vacuolized microalgae. A hypothesis is put forward as to
coordinated action of ion-transport systems of the plasmalemma and mec
hanisms of osmoregulation during adaptation to hyperosmotic salinity s
tress.
