A thermocouple-based calorimetric technique is described for studying
in-vacuum samples that are exposed to single laser pulses generated in
the free-running mode. The degree of heating the samples, the heat fl
uxes, and the fraction of the laser-pulse energy converted into residu
al thermal energy of the samples were determined at laser radiation in
tensities of 10(5) - 10(7) W/cm2. Approximating expressions are obtain
ed for computing the sample heating and the effect of initial temperat
ure on the enthalpy increment.
