The effects of water activity (a(w)) on the growth rates of two isolat
es of Alternaria alternata and a single isolate each of Cladosporium c
ladosporioides, Clad. sphaerospermum, Curvularia lunata and Curv. pall
escens were examined at 25-degrees-C. The a(w) of the growth media was
controlled by glucose/fructose. The minimum a(w) for germination of A
. alternata, Curvularia lunata and Curv. pallescens was 0.855. Cladosp
orium cladosporioides and Clad. sphaerospermum germinated at a minimum
a(w) of 0.815. Clad. sphaerospermum also grew at this a(w) but germin
ating conidia of Clad. cladosporioides did not produce microcolonies.
