DETERMINATION OF THE DISTRIBUTION COEFFICIENTS FOR CS-134, CO-60 AND TH-234 IN THE PINHEIROS RIVER SEDIMENT-WATER

The distribution coefficients (Kd) for Cs-134, Co-60 and Th-234 were d etermined experimentally m order to foresee the fate of these radionuc lides discharged to Pinheiros River by IPEN's facilities. The paramete rs studied in the laboratory were the effect of pH, aerobic condition and the time of contact. The results obtained experimentally confirm t he predictions that the cesium is slowly retained by the sediment alon g the Pinheiros River. The retention of cobalt, which is an unstable e lement, is affected by variations in the pH. Thorium is almost complet ely retained in the vicinity of the discharge point.
