Rd. Apostolova et Em. Shembel, SELECTION OF A CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL FOR A BATTERY BASED ON THE LI-SO2 SYSTEM, Russian journal of applied chemistry, 66(2), 1993, pp. 233-238
To select the most corrosion resistant construction material for a sec
ondary Li-SO2 battery in a perchlorate electrolyte based on sulfolane
and acetonitrile, the electrochemical activity was studied of several
metals in an SO2-containing electrolyte. It was found that metals tent
atively related to the ''nickel group'' (nickel, titanium, KP-08 steel
, tantalum) dissolve in the charging cycle of these batteries. Metals
of the ''aluminum'' group (aluminum SAV alloy, stainless steel) are pa
ssivated in the charging cycle of the batteries during anodic polariza
tion. Aluminum and its alloys are recommended as cathodic current cont
rollers for an Li-SO, accumulator [storage cell] in an electrolyte bas
ed on sulfolane, aceto-nitrile (1:1), LiClO4, and SO2.
