The chromatic dispersion in standard single mode fibers puts a fundame
ntal limit to the transmission distance in conventional high speed opt
ical communication systems. Soliton transmission is a very promising t
echnique to avoid this limitation. We demonstrate 4 Gb/s soliton trans
mission on 310 km standard non dispersion-shifted single mode fiber us
ing 55 ps pulses from a gain-switched MQW laser diode. This technique
is applicable for upgrading the transmission capacity in dispersion li
mited terrestrial communication systems.
