Paczynski has recently noted that gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) should be su
rrounded by transient X-ray halos due to the scattering of the X-rays
at the interstellar dust grains, if they are of extragalactic origin.
Based on an estimate of the peak gamma ray to peak X-ray flux of the G
RBs by Yoshida et al.,we fmd that the brightest bursts with fluxes F(g
amma) greater than or similar to 10(-4) ergs s-1 cm-2 could produce tr
ansient halos at E almost-equal-to 1 keV with intensities well above t
he X-ray background intensity.
