Nd3+ doped LiTaO3 congruent crystal has been grown and the optical pro
perties (absorption and fluorescence) of this ion investigated. The pr
esence of three non-equivalent crystal field sites has been ascertaine
d for the Nd3+ ion. By using laser site selective spectroscopy the 4I9
/2, 4I11/2 and 4F3/2 energy levels and lifetimes associated to these N
d3+ sites have been experimentally determined so that each site can be
optically characterized. The experimental results axe compared with t
hose reported for the isostructural system LiNbO3:Nd.
