The prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases in devel
oping countries is complicated by a number of factors. High prevalence
rates, inadequate diagnostic and treatment facilities, frequent resis
tance to less expensive antibiotics, associations both epidemiological
ly and clinically with the HIV pandemic, and a variety of social, beha
vioural and economic factors act as constraints to effective control.
