Curved optical waveguides are often fabricated of modeled as a success
ion of discrete linear segments connected at abrupt directional change
s. A novel beam-propagation algorithm is presented that models the exa
ct geometry of such a segmented curve. These results are compared with
those from a continuous-curve algorithm and show the influence of the
