Abstract
An explicit and stable time-domain method that solves the propagation of wave envelopes in optical structures is proposed. Based on the Dufo rt-Frankel method and variable change, it is an explicit difference ap proach. The method requires less memory and CPU time and is applied to the propagation of a 500-fs pulse in a diffusive waveguide and in pla nar waveguides over 2 mm. Transient behavior of the pulse and the effe cts of waveguide parameters are given. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc .
