Escherichia coli were isolated from 51 out of a total of 90 specimens
examined from enteritis cases of dogs. The isolates were resistant to
streptomycin, sulfadiazine and tetracyclines. They were invariably sus
ceptible to 12 out of 17 anti-microbials tested and the susceptibility
was on the high side to neomycin, co-trimoxazole, polymyxin-B. gentam
icin and nalidixic acid. A judicious use of the antimicrobials is advo
cated in the treatment of enteric and other infections of dogs with an
aim to limit the emergence of resistant E. coli.
