Energy spectra of positive and negative pions from the processes n + p
--> pi+/- + N + N have been measured for incident neutron energies fr
om 460 to 560 MeV at average emission angles of 90-degrees and 166-deg
rees in the centre of mass system. A significant asymmetry in the prod
uction of pi+ and pi- has been found at backward angles. This result m
anifests a significant contribution of the non-resonant pion productio
n from an isoscalar initial state.
