This paper describes a hadron calorimeter prototype with cylindrical c
ompressed-gas ionization chambers. The noise characteristics in two mo
des of analog signal adding are compared. The calorimeter's energy res
olution under pion beams with momenta of 312, 43, and 56 GeV/c was mea
sured. The coordinate' resolution under the 56-GeV/c pion beam was eva
luated. The paper outlines ways to improve the device to suit a collid
er experiment.
