This paper reports that results of extensive laboratory experiments in
vestigating removal of manganese by chelation pretreatment and the red
eposition of manganese onto pulp fibers under alkaline conditions. Pre
treatment pH was found to be the most important control parameter in r
emoving manganese from kraft pulp. The dissolved organic concentration
and pulp slurry consistency had the greatest impact on the level of m
anganese redeposited onto pulp under alkaline conditions.
